Girls’ Day 2025: Discovering the future – girls in science and technology

ZIB opened its doors again on April 3, 2025 for the annual Girls’Day. In cooperation with the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Freie Universität Berlin, we were able to offer more than 200 places for schoolgirls. The offer was very well received with 187 participants, 61 of whom took part in the workshops at ZIB:

  1. What do stacking oranges and timetabling have in common?
  2. From Sudoku to road networks: exciting applications of graph theory
  3. Mathematicians on the trail of chance
  4. A picture says more than a thousand numbers
  5. The Internet as a treasure – finding and reusing digitized works of art

The event kicked off with an inspiring introduction by our Vice President, Prof. Dr. Andrea Walther, who presented ZIB and its research. In addition to the workshops, an interactive quiz and exciting guided tours of our supercomputer Lise made for an eventful day.

What are the requirements for such a day?
Stephanie Riedmüller from the EnergyLab of the Research Campus MODAL was responsible for the main organisation of the event, the interested girls were of course not to be missed and there was broad support from many employees, so we would like to thank the many helping hands from science, IT and administration. Without them, an event like this would not be possible.

We look forward to seeing some of the participants again as scientists at ZIB in the future!
