Jaap Pedersen Defends His Dissertation on Innovative Optimization Methods for the Energy Infrastructure of the Future

We warmly congratulate Jaap Pedersen on the successful defense of his dissertation, “Optimized Network Topology Design for Future Energy Infrastructure,” which he presented on July 9, 2026, at the Technical University of Berlin!

In his thesis, Jaap Pedersen focuses on the development of cutting-edge mathematical models and solution algorithms for planning future energy infrastructures. At the forefront of his work are two innovative mathematical optimization tools that tackle complex planning tasks using algorithmic methods:

  • FlyingSCIPJack: This tool combines Steiner tree models for the optimal placement of turbines in wind farms with the associated cable routing in an integrated approach, rather than the traditional sequential consideration of these two optimization problems. Particular emphasis is placed on accounting for wake effects to more accurately estimate potential energy yield.
  • COCOS: A specialized planning tool for the transport of captured carbon dioxide, for example from the cement industry. COCOS enables the optimal design and sizing of pipeline networks for the transport of liquid or supercritical CO₂ for safe storage or industrial reuse.

Both application areas involve highly complex combinatorial optimization problems. To efficiently solve these practical and complex planning tasks, Jaap Pedersen developed specialized mathematical algorithms.
