The MODAL-Forschungscampus proudly announces the successful extension of the MATH+ Cluster of Excellence, which will receive continued funding for another seven years under the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments. This renewed support recognizes the world-class research achievements of the cluster and affirms Berlin’s standing as a global hub for applications-driven mathematical innovation.
As a key institutional partner, ZIB plays a central role in advancing MATH+’s interdisciplinary mission. “This funding confirms the strength of our research at the intersection of mathematics, computing, and societal relevance,” said Professor Sebastian Pokutta, ZIB’s Vice President and one of the cluster’s three chairs. Vice President Professor Andrea Walther, also one of the three chairs of MATH+, adds: “It empowers us to address pressing global challenges — from climate change to technological transformation — through cutting-edge mathematical tools.”
ZIB’s and MODAL-Forschungscampus contributions will be pivotal in the cluster’s conceptual expansion, particularly in modeling human behavior and enhancing the mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence. New collaborative initiatives, such as research on the mobility and energy transition or for new energy materials and partnerships with public and private sectors, will drive innovative applications and knowledge transfer.
“This continued support for MATH+ underscores the vital role mathematics plays in solving real-world problems,” adds Professor Christof Schuette, the President of ZIB.
