G-RIPS Students Reunite to Present Their Work

On April 6, the four students who attended the G-RIPS program 2016 at the ZIB MODAL RailLab met again at the “7th International Conference on Railway Operations Modelling and Analysis (RailLille)” in Lille to present their work on “Conflict-Free Railway Track Assignment at Depots”. During their 8 week internship at Zuse Institute in 2016 the students worked with real world data from European railway operators to develop algorithms that park as many trains as possible in a yard without any shunting operations. Even after the program was finished, the students continued their cooperation with Zuse Institute to write a research article, which they were now able to present.

The international conference RailLille 2017 is the major event for scientific exchange on operations research for railway systems. The conference is organized by the International Association of Railway Operations Research (IAROR) every two years. The conference has been strongly supported by the Research Campus MODAL RailLab with three papers, two presentations, and one tutorial lecture.

G-RIPS stands for Graduate-Level Research in Industrial Projects for Students. The annual program is organized jointly by the Research Campus  MODAL and the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

European students who want to join the program in 2017 can still apply until April 15!
