The German Operations Research Society (GOR) awards every year a price for outstanding dissertations in the field of Operations Research. The prize is sponsored by Siemens AG, and handed over at the society’s annual meeting, which in this year was organized by the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Science and the Faculty of Business and Economics at TU Dresden. One of the four theses that were selected by this year’s prize committee was “Presolving techniques and linear relaxations for cumulative scheduling” Stefan Heinz (Technische Universität Berlin, supervisor: Prof. Dr. Thorsten Koch).
Stefan Heinz’s thesis advances the field of constraint integer programming. By implementing a cumulative constraint into a general purpose solver, he shows how to solve various classes of scheduling problems as efficient as state-of-the-art problem specific solvers. His methods are available in open source within the constraint integer programming framework SCIP. Stefan Heinz is now working for Gurobi in the SynLab of the BMBF Research Campus MODAL.
